WASHINGTON, D.C. – Long time anti-gun New York Rep. Eliot Engel and 91 other lawmakers in Congress signed a letter to President Obama asking him to take further executive action against gun owners in America. Engel is the highest-ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee has never met a gun control law he doesn’t like.
Rep. Engel is calling for additional executive actions on gun control that he considers loopholes allowing the import of rifles with certain features from foreign countries.
“Expanding background checks to include additional gun sellers is an important step, and we welcome recent reports that your administration is planning to take that step. But, in accordance with the Gun Control Act of 1968, we respectfully ask that you also consider tightening significantly the rules that currently allow for the importation into the U.S. of military-style assault weapons”.
The term “loophole” is becoming the term by the anti-gun crowd and Engel considers everything a “loophole” when it comes to current laws pertaining to guns.
The Gun Control Act prohibits the importation into the U.S. of any firearm that is not “generally recognized as particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes.” But “unfortunately,” Engel wrote, “current guidance treats these terms too narrowly, focusing only on the inclusion of specific parts and components.
There are already laws (Gun Control Act of 1968) prohibiting the importation of firearms into the country from abroad with some strictly enforced exceptions including guns that can be made readily adaptable to “sporting purposes” as defined by a number of physical features such as size and caliber. In 1989 and 1998 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted studies aimed at further defining the sporting purpose test to cover guns used in such traditional tasks as hunting and the shooting sports.
Engel is a poster boy for every restriction on firearms ownership you can imagine.
- On March 13, 2015, three days after the BATFE rescinded its proposed ammo ban framework regulation, anti-gun U.S. Representative Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) introduced H.R. 1358, a bill designed to ban civilian use and possession of M855 ammunition. This is the same round that the BATFE, after meeting fierce bipartisan opposition from Capitol Hill and from NRA members and supporters across the country, decided to rescind its framework to ban M855 ammunition.
- On January 30, 2013, he re-introducing legislation to ban the “Five-seveN” handgun. This handgun is a pistol capable of killing a police officer wearing a bullet-proof vest from over 200 meters away.
- In July 2011 he penned a letter to the Editor of the NY Times blaming US Imports but neglected to mention “Fast and Furious”. “More and more cheap AK-47 “knockoffs” imported into the United States have been smuggled into Mexico and are contributing to the lethal violence south of the border. We can do something about this.”
