The Charleston County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased suspect as 31-year-old Lamar Brown of Summerville who died from gunshot wounds.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s department arrested another suspect, 28-year-old Ira J. Bennett of North Charleston and charged him with first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Deputies responded to a home on Elderwood Drive around 1:53 p.m. after a report of shots fired.
According to the statement made by the teenager. he was home alone when a vehicle pulled up behind his home. Two suspects attempted to get into the home, and the young man fearing for his safety, retrieved his mother’s gun and began firing at the suspect.
He saw a subject out back trying to get inside so he fired his mother’s gun through the door and the subject reportedly returned fire back said officials. The neighbors reported hearing gun shots and then seeing a small gray vehicle speed away from the scene.
Police officials say a gray Chevy Sonic arrived at Trident Hospital with several gunshot holes. The driver, Ira J. Bennett transported the passenger to the hospital where he told police someone had shot his care while he was driving on the interstate.
The boy’s mother said her family was shaken up by the incident, and left the home for the night, saying they didn’t feel safe at the home anymore.
Neighbors said they were thankful for the boy’s quick action.
